(Unless it's a locked post or something, obviously.)
Content warnings and sensitive subjects: I'd prefer to avoid graphic descriptions of abuse towards young children, the elderly, or animals, though I'm fine with these being mentioned in passing. Also, graphic eye mutilation makes me squeamish.
Anything else: If you're iffy about anything, just ask! I'm pretty chill and have precious few legitimate triggers, so even if you forget to content warn about any of the above, it likely won't be a deal-breaker.

★ In Character Permissions ★

Physical affection: Go for it, reactions will range from accepting to awkwardly disengaging to shoving you into the nearest brick wall. Depends on how she's vibing that particular day.
Romance: I am shipping trash, so yes. She's a little prickly at first but can warm up to people, especially once she gets her footing here <s>(and gets over her unexpected break-up, whoops)</s>.
Violence: She's more likely to kick ass in a verbal joust, but she will absolutely grab the closest thing she can reach and use it as a weapon if she or her friends are threatened.
Injuries: Aside from the aforementioned graphic eye mutilation thing, let's rumble.
Death: Sure, but let's discuss first.
Telepathy and mind-reading: She has no defenses against either of these things and would absolutely feel violated if it's done without her permission, but I'm personally okay with it and try to include as much as I can in the narrative to facilitate that kind of thing.
Content warnings and sensitive subjects related to the character: While she doesn't talk much about her family life unless she really knows and trusts someone, her history involves childhood emotional neglect, constant fear of abandonment, and witnessing domestic violence and alcohol/substance abuse. Her parents are generally good people, but their relationship with one another is toxic and is a big part of why MJ is wary of forming close interpersonal bonds. She also has some dark, macabre interests that she may bring up to purposely set people on edge, such as serial killers, conspiracy theories, and general nihilism. I'll warn for any of these as they may come up in a tag, but if you'd rather avoid these subjects altogether, drop me a line and I'll respect it.
Content warnings and sensitive subjects this character won't be involved in: I'm game for most things, but this section will be updated should anything spring to mind.

comments

❥ Folkmore Roles & Attributes

Skills: MJ is a mini-Sherlock. Her skills of deduction aren’t quite so detailed, but she’s good at absorbing details and drawing logical conclusions out of them. In a lot of ways, she’d much rather be an outside observer, since it helps her get a better read on things without any subjective opinions; as for her emotions, she’s good at burying or ignoring them if it will help her be a better asset. She’s also good at picking up languages, showing a canon fluency in Italian (including nuanced slang).
Canon Abilities: Outside of having a great poker face even while being interrogated, she has no canon abilities and is just your regular human.
Role: Familiar
Role Qualities/Attributes: MJ will find herself with increased night vision and better hand-eye coordination. She’ll eventually be able to transform into a burrowing owl, and her eyes will take on a golden shine.
Role Reasoning: MJ is a civilian bystander, roped into more dangerous situations than she has any right being involved in due to her close proximity to Spider-Man (first unwittingly, and then very, very willingly). While resourceful and possessing a keen eye for details that might otherwise go unnoticed, she functions in more of a support role than any kind of direct heroism. While she tends to assume the worst, she always hopes for the best, because she implicitly trusts in Peter and others like him to do whatever needs to be done for the greater good, even when it might hurt in the moment.

❥ Personality

OPTION 2 QUESTIONS (PICK 4-5) 100-300 WORD LIMIT EACH:

What is the most important and defining relationship(s) in your character's life and why?

The most important relationship for MJ is always going to be her relationship with Peter, though not for the romantic aspect of it. MJ is incredibly jaded (“a deeply mistrusting person,” as another Peter called her seconds after meeting her), and Peter Parker… isn’t. Even with both of his parents gone, even with the stress of being Spider-Man, even with everything he’s lost over the course of his short life, Peter is still a good, open person who always seems to believe that any obstacle can be overcome with the right people and/or tools. While MJ will always define herself as a pragmatist (probably with a bit of a pessimistic bent), having Peter’s optimism there to balance her out and inspire hope helps her see the brighter side of any situation. She also respects his intelligence as much as his moral fortitude, often leading her to look at a situation and wonder what Peter would do, and how she’d be able to emulate that with whatever she might have on hand.

What is a headcanon (or two) you feel strongly about and that you prefer playing your character with? How is this supported in canon and why do you think it benefits the character's story?

Canon implies that MJ has a not-great home life, but doesn’t really expand on that. I headcanon her parents as being relatively young, with MJ having been conceived during their senior year of high school. Her dad quit school so he could work and save money to support his girlfriend and child, though he later earned his GED and tried to build an actual life for himself beyond his family. Her mom has no idea how to be a mom and often left MJ with her grandparents. While they never married, their relationship has been consistently on-again/off-again throughout the years. Neither of her parents are inherently bad people, but the upheaval of having had a child while still children themselves has strained their relationship and made it toxic, with some alcohol and/or substance abuse being involved as an attempted coping mechanism. MJ grew up witnessing a lot of yelling, the occasional domestic violence (though was never the recipient of any physical harm), the constant possibility of abandonment by one or both parents, her parents often putting her in the middle of their disputes, and the distinct impression that they would have both had much better lives if she’d never been born. MJ hid in her room whenever they started fighting just so she could avoid the worst of it, and she’d used her self-imposed isolation to read voraciously, using self-education as a balm. This helps explain why she’s so guarded during her first appearance in Homecoming while also being so pleased when her teammates showered her with hugs when she’d helped win the Academic Decathlon; as much as she keeps people at arm’s length because she doesn’t want to end up in an unhealthy relationship (romantic or otherwise), she does want validation and some form of genuine human connection.

What does your character feel like they struggle with still? Where could they improve? This could be physically, mentally, emotionally, or otherwise.

While MJ has gotten better at reading social cues and generally being a good friend, she still struggles with trusting new people. The few friends she has are people she’d known through some of her most formative years, and so she knows they don’t mean her any harm. But new people are an unknown variable, and she automatically assumes the worst of them until she learns how to read them. She also still doesn’t open up easily; while she might be able to form superficial connections with people, the thought of giving her all to a wide variety of people sounds exhausting and off-putting. She’d much rather cultivate a small handful of deep, meaningful relationships and keep the rest of the populace out of her inner circle. She won’t be outright mean to anyone (unless they deserve it), but she can definitely come off as aloof and distant. If anyone wants to try and get past those initial hurdles, though, they can eventually wear her down, but she’s not exactly going to advertise that.

What is your character's safespace? When do they feel the most settled and comfortable? When do they feel confident and relaxed?

In terms of a physical space, there’s no place MJ feels safer than her bedroom. Sure, she’s learned to open up a bit at school and has good memories elsewhere, but her room is her anchor, her shield against the parental disruptions that might otherwise plague her. The neglect doesn’t feel so much like neglect when she purposely surrounds herself with the things that make her happy: her sketches and photography, her books, the various comforting sources of muted light and colors. Like the layers of clothing she tends to favor, she has a variety of sheets, blankets, and comforters that she’ll cycle through, as though using them as stand-ins for the physical affection she lacks at home. She’s slowly learning that nothing beats the real thing, though, so she’s been willingly emerging from her sanctuary more and more often as her relationship with Peter has grown, gradually finding her footing in the world. She’s still at her happiest when she’s learning something new or having a conversation about social philosophy, but instead of being a background character who occasionally has a pithy observation to make, she’s now more secure with being an active participant in a situation.

Any and all of these ideas can be altered to include any character, MCU or otherwise. I'm also up for NPCing a wide range of characters if we want to include others to flesh things out. Regardless of when/where you stumble across this post, feel free to reach out to me if any of these ideas strike your fancy, or if you have any other ideas you'd like to play around with!

Unless we're specifically playing within the events of No Way Home or earlier, assume that MJ is 18+. If you're comfortable with aging up for shipping purposes, I'm willing to play her up to around her mid-20s. Her open post is here if you want to jump right in, and I have a running list of some headcanons I play around with here!

Many of these ideas include spoilers for No Way Home and/or Multiverse of Madness, if that's still an issue. Spoilers for anything more recent will be appropriately blacked out as necessary.

Post-No Way Home possibilities

Do her memories ever return after the events of NWH? Does she ever see that weird Peter kid at her job again? And what about her hazy memories of a connection to Spider-Man? I typically headcanon that she, like everyone else, retains all of her memories of Spider-Man, but if she ever thinks about a time where she'd seen Spider-Man without his mask (most notably on Tower Bridge or Liberty Island) there's a blank spot in her memories. (I also tend to headcanon that she tends to get panic attacks if she thinks about those blank spots too hard, but I understand not everyone wants to play around with that, so I'll always ask before bringing it up.) I am up for her dealing with the fallout of the memory loss and either eventually moving on or else remembering more and more, possibly approaching Dr. Strange or some other magically-inclined person to see if they can help her with her memories.

Multiverse of Madness possibilities

MoM never specifies whether Strange remembers Ned or MJ after NWH, though there's no reason why he wouldn't as per the parameters of the spell. I like to think that he just remembers Ned as some kid who managed to steal his sling ring and ended up having some magical potential, and MJ as his partner in crime. He may have chosen to teach Ned a little more magic just so he doesn't risk hurting himself somehow, and since MJ seems to be the responsible one, he lets her occasionally spend time in the Sanctum where she mostly just studies and (usually) keeps Ned from rooting through Strange's stuff. (A Ned for magical misadventures set between NWH and MoM would be great!) With that kind of background in mind, I think it would be interesting if Wanda approached MJ and convinced her that Strange had stolen some of her memories, and she offers to help her get them back if she can help Wanda get America. MJ has no reason to distrust Wanda, and it might cause some conflict between her and Strange, eventually culminating in her unintentionally working for the "bad guy." I also think it would be interesting if she became friends with America, and if in doing so, she inadvertently travels to another universe and comes across alternate Peters or alternate versions of herself. She still wouldn't remember them (which would be especially confusing for the two other Peters who've met her), but she could begin to suspect that her memories have been tampered with and confront Strange or Wong about this, or this could even be what sends her to Wanda, since Wanda knows what it's like to have someone she loves taken away from her by force. MJ might even have some latent magical potential that Wanda manages to bring out, even if it's nowhere near as good or as flashy as the other magic-users running around. In short, bring me the entire cast of MoM, please. And the entire cast of anything ever, because it's the multiverse so anything can happen.

The Black Dahlias AU

After the events of NWH, MJ no longer has Peter around to act as a stabilizing force in her life, and so her activism eventually spirals into vigilantism. It starts off small, going from protesting to vandalism to eventually investigating crooked authority figures and presenting her gathered evidence to the police with no charges being pressed. Frustrated, she realizes that she has to take matters into her own hands, and that's when she starts training "just in case" things get violent (spoiler: they do). She either joins up with other disenfranchised women and form a group called the Black Dahlias, or else she becomes a lone vigilante that comes to be known as the Black Dahlia. She might eventually intern with Nelson, Murdock, and Page to gain access to incriminating information, or come across Frank Castle who opts to teach her a harsh lesson, or Spider-Man could seem weirdly desperate to discourage her from going down this road. This AU is pretty wide-open, since she could feasibly interact with just about anyone who happens to be on the streets of NYC (or another city, if that makes it easier).

Stranger Things AU

Peter Parker was experimented on by Dr. Brenner (or others like him) and had been busted out of the lab as a child by his Aunt May and Uncle Ben, trying to live a normal life in New York City where they can get lost in the crowd. This was how he'd come to meet MJ, who soon figured out that there was more to Peter than met the eye. Unfortunately, shortly after this he was recaptured and disappeared. Ben had died when Peter was young and May was killed during the recapture, leaving MJ to feel obligated to find him and keep him safe. Her search for him eventually lands her in Hawkins, Indiana, where she either enrolled in school to finish her last year and keep an ear out for any relevant rumors, or if she'd just graduated from high school she may have opted for a local job to support herself financially (maybe even at a certain mall or video store). Perhaps she's been in Hawkins a couple of years now and so has some entwined history with the locals, maybe trusting Joyce and/or Hopper enough to have them help her in her search. Either way, she'd likely just sort of hover in the background whenever there's weird stuff going on or being talked about, and so would have any number of reasons to interact with any ST characters with minimal changes being needed on their parts, unless you want to include them. Other MCUs for this idea would also be great, including Peter or Ned as the1980s equivalent of the "guy in the chair."

Scooby-Doo University AU

I like mystery and horror and I also like college shenanigans. Let's combine it all into something fun but also a little spooky. Actual ghosts? Magic gone wrong? Disappearing/murdered students with a long list of possible suspects? Weekend trip gone awry? I'm very down for using this prompt to crossover with all sorts of other horror/urban fantasy canons, like Supernatural, the Buffyverse, or yes, even Scooby-Doo. Lay it on me.

Smushing Two (or more) Canons Together AU

Do you want some cross-canon interaction, but don't know how to initiate it? Just let me know! Whether it's using the MCU's built-in multiverse mechanics or seamlessly stitching together two different canons, I tend to be pretty good at figuring out how to get two characters together. I admit that I'm most familiar with Western media, but if I'm canonblind I don't mind doing a little research to figure out how to best make it happen!

comments

This is a running list of headcanons I've developed for MJ, as her backstory isn't a main focal point. If canon ever ends up contradicting anything here, I will update as necessary (unless canon is dumb, in which case I'll note when I'm purposely diverting from canon).

- She was born at the end of her parents' senior year of high school. Her parents were never married, but gave her both of their surnames because they'd assumed they'd get around to it. Her mother, however, eventually decided that she wasn't ready to be a mother and after years of verbal abuse and general dysfunction disappeared from her child and ex's lives. Her dad eventually earned his GED and with the support of his extended family in the early years, was eventually able to get on his feet. He still reached out to his daughter's mother with updates, but only sporadically received any replies. After he and MJ were Blipped, he once again tried to reach out to her mother once they returned, but has received radio silence since then. (Note: the MCU wiki claims that MJ's dad is the one who'd disappeared and only recently reappeared in her life, but given that she mentions her father in NWH and never mentions her mother in any of the movies, I'm more inclined to believe that her mother is the one who isn't in the picture, at least until the movies flesh out her family relationships a little more explicitly. I'd also initially thought this because her last name is hyphenated as Jones-Watson and traditionally in most Western cultures, the paternal surname comes first when hyphenating a child's name; however, the MCU wiki also cites her father's name as Philip Watson, supporting their claim that he's the reason she doesn't use her second surname. So depending on future movies, this may all change.)

- She's biracial; her father is Black and her mother is white. Since she has no relationship with her mother at all, she's much more connected to her heritage on her father's side.

- Her experience with her mother and that entire side of the family made her reluctant to open up to people, so she remained largely isolated for most of her adolescence. It wasn't until she won the Academic Decathlon for her school during Homecoming and her teammates showered her with hugs and validation that she slowly started coming out of her shell.

- She'd noticed Peter early on in freshman year, possibly even joining a couple of extracurriculars just because of him. She was still too shy and inexperienced with people to really say or do anything, other than quietly take note that he started acting weird and dropping a lot of his clubs by sophomore year (because of the Spider-Man thing, but she wouldn't figure that much out for sure for another year). She liked how honest and earnest he was, though he was clearly still hiding something and that provided for a fun mystery for her to parse out in her spare time.

- Peter was her main reason for wanting to attend M.I.T. She knew it was his and Ned's first choice, and while she's always happy to be another woman in the STEM field, it still wasn't necessarily the college of her dreams. She'll never say as much, though, because she'd never admit that she made a major life decision based on what a man wants. Gross. (I also occasionally toy with the idea that she actually had gotten into M.I.T. when Peter and Ned hadn't, since she hadn't really been any more directly involved in any Spider-shenanigans than Flash had been, but when she saw that they didn't get in, she quickly tore up her letter and left it at that.)

- Post-No Way Home, MJ still has memories of Spider-Man but none of Peter. While this usually doesn't impact her, if she tries to think of any experiences in which she's seen Spider-Man without his mask (Tower Bridge, the Statue of Liberty, etc.), instead of seeing Peter's face her brain has put up a mental block in the form of panic attacks. As curious as she is about what's hiding in her own brain and why she can't access it, she hates the helpless feeling of panic that accompanies these memories and so tries her best to leave them alone. She assumes she has memory loss associated with PTSD, and her brain is simply trying to protect her from particularly traumatizing memories. So she knows that Spider-Man is a trigger of sorts for her, but doesn't understand why.

- She still wears the broken black dahlia necklace Peter had given her, but this is another trigger for her panic attacks. It's a part of her and she doesn't question it, but if she tries to recall details about how she'd gotten it, it can potentially send her spiraling. She remembers Happy giving it to her in London and telling her that Spider-Man wanted her to have it, and she remembers running to the bridge to confront Spider-Man about it, but she doesn't remember their conversation and so doesn't understand why Spider-Man would give her a necklace.

- She rarely eats meat, though doesn't consider herself a vegetarian. She just tends to subsist mainly on coffee and carbs. As a native New Yorker, she has very strong opinions on pizza. And bagels. And food in general, even if she just grazes more than she actually eats.

- She doesn't think too hard about labels, but she'd probably consider herself bisexual (though she's probably more pansexual and just doesn't realize that yet).

- She's a native English speaker, fairly fluent in Italian, has a middling understanding of Latin, can parse out most romance languages just based on the languages she already knows, and has picked up a few phrases in Tagalog thanks to hanging out with Ned's Lola.

comments

My tagging speed varies depending on several factors, but generally I try to empty my inbox at least once a day; if not, I can usually get to things by the weekend. Text threads or shorter threads are easier to boomerang, but that doesn't make me love longer threads any less (especially since I'm usually guilty of tl;dr for at least the first few tags in a scene). Explicit threads (whether smutty, violent, or something else) will occasionally take me a little longer to get to just because I want to give them my full attention and can't do that when I'm at work or multitasking. If you're ever concerned that I may have lost track of one of our threads, please reach out!

In Character

Hugging/Physical contact: Go for it, though she'll probably stand stock-still if you're not a close friend (or shove you away if she actively doesn't like you).

Flirting/Affection: Yup! If she doesn't like you, she'll just reply with sarcasm. If she does like you... well, the sarcasm doesn't go away, but she'll add a bit of flirting of her own.

Fighting: Come at her. She's no brawler, but she'll defend herself if she needs to.

Injury/Death: Bruises and scrapes and whatnot are fine, but let's discuss beforehand if any serious bodily injury or death is set to happen.

Magic/psionics: Unless we're doing an AU, MJ has no magical or psychic ability and no defenses built up against such abilities. Getting into her head would result in glimpses of an isolated childhood with a tumultuous family life, using self-education as a balm/distraction (and, depending on the canonpoint, blank spots with missing memories regarding a certain nerdy wallcrawler). We can hash out additional details as needed.

Powers / Abilities

She's got the power of sarcasm and friendship. And she's great at Scooby-Doo-ing shit.

Real talk: she's extremely observant and analytical. If you're secretly a superhero/villain? She will likely be the first to figure it out. But don't worry, she probably won't call you out on it. It's nice to be right, but she won't gloat about it.

Peter Parker thinks she's one of the smartest people he knows, and since he may be the smartest hero the MCU currently has to offer, that's saying a lot. And no, neither the character nor player is biased towards Peter and his genius.

Shipping

OTP/NoTP: Yes to any iteration of Peter Parker, Ned Leeds, Gwen Stacy, America Chavez, Yelena Belova, Shuri, Stephen Strange (I'm trash, I know), and anyone who's more of a peer and less of a parent (this doesn't have to do with age so much as how she perceives them; May/December is a fave of mine). She also seems to mesh well with DC's Batfam and most of the Titans. Very open to cross-canon, AUs, and OCs. Platonic only for Happy, May, and other versions of MJ.

Preferences: Nerds, outcasts, people with a thick enough skin to not wither under her sarcastic teasing. (Though let's be real, I'm shipping trash, so as long as there's not an outright antagonistic relationship between them, I'm usually willing to make most things work.)

Smut: The MCU timeline is a bit ridiculous, but post-Thunderbolts* she is 21 and in her last year of college. Regardless of when or how, if shipping with an adult or smut happens, assume she is at least 18 unless your character is 16/17 and/or we've discussed otherwise. I'm willing to play out smut (including pretty graphic kinks), fade to black, or completely handwave a sexual history, depending on what my partner is comfortable with.

Kink List

Favorites

Clothed sex

Consensual

Dirty talking

Hair-pulling

Handjobs / fingerjobs

Light / medium bondage

Masturbation

Oral sex

Scratching

Spanking

Strip tease

Teasing

Vaginal sex

Virginity

Yes

Anal sex

Breathplay

Biting

Blindfolding

Breast / nipple play

Dub con

Magic use

Multiple partners

Older partners

Pegging

Photography / videotaping

Public sex

Rimming

Risk of pregnancy

Sex toys

Xeno

Maybe

Master / pet

Medical play

Non-consensual

Any kink not mentioned under no; just ask!

No

Branding / burning

Infantilism

Sounding

Swallowing blood / feces / urine

Vore

Vomitting

Watersports

comments
